K9 Lifesavers Mexico A.C. is a registered nonprofit civil association based in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, dedicated to improving the lives of abused, abandoned and vulnerable dogs in Mexico.

For approximately six years, an important part of our work was dedicated to helping the dogs housed at CENCAAZ, Playa del Carmen’s municipal animal welfare facility. Working alongside volunteers, rescuers and previous municipal administrations, we provided veterinary testing, medical treatments, medications, rehabilitation assistance and support that helped give many dogs a second chance at life.

We are proud of what was accomplished during those years and remain deeply grateful to the volunteers, veterinarians, donors, rescuers and public officials whose cooperation and transparency made that work possible.

K9 Lifesavers Mexico A.C. has now made the difficult decision to withdraw its assistance from, and formal collaboration with, CENCAAZ.

Changes in municipal policies, procedures and leadership have fundamentally changed the conditions under which our Association is able to collaborate. In our experience, the level of communication, transparency and independent cooperation necessary for K9 Lifesavers Mexico A.C. to responsibly continue its work at CENCAAZ is no longer present. Formal communications and requests submitted to municipal authorities have also remained unanswered.

As an independent Civil Association, K9 Lifesavers Mexico A.C. believes that meaningful cooperation between government and civil society must be based upon mutual respect, transparency, accountability and recognition of each organization’s independence.

For these reasons, our resources and attention will now be dedicated directly to Mexican street dogs, as well as to independent rescuers, foster homes and other animal-welfare organizations that need our assistance.

Requests for assistance will be considered case by case, taking into account the needs of the animal, available resources, veterinary requirements and our ability to provide meaningful help.

Our door is not closed to CENCAAZ.

We sincerely hope that a time will come when conditions once again allow K9 Lifesavers Mexico A.C. to work alongside the Municipality of Playa del Carmen in a relationship based on transparency, cooperation and mutual respect. When that day comes, we would welcome the opportunity to once again help the dogs housed there.

Until then, our mission continues.

Saving lives, one dog at a time.
