K9 Lifesavers Mexico AC was invited to the inauguration the new Sanctuary of the Animal Welfare Center (Cebiam), in the Bellavista neighborhood of Playa del Carmen.

“We managed to renovate and equip our Animal Welfare Center of the Municipality (Cebiam), in order to ensure public health, dignify the life of domestic fauna that, for various reasons, has been violated or exposed to a situation of abandonment and abuse,” said the Municipal President, Laura Beristain.

“They also suffer from diseases and situations that require special attention,” she commented after announcing the appointment of Mr. Juan Carlos Cano, as the supervising manager of the Sanctuary CEBIAM. Participating in the event along side the Municipal President was the councilor Neri Deyanira Martínez Martínez, the coordinator of Cebiam, Ignacio Daniel López Fernández; dr. Armando Martínez Lara of the College of Veterinarians; the Secretary of Social Justice and Citizen Participation, Deyanira Martínez Estrada and the Chief Officer of the City Council, Yazmín Díaz Ojeda.

It is with great anticipation that with the inauguration of this special location, the government will work more closely with the non government organizations and devote more effort and resources to enhancing and protecting the welfare of street dogs in Playa del Carmen.

While the governments primary goal of getting these dogs off the streets has always been to protect the general public health of its citizens from generated diseases, the involvement and influence of non government organizations has been essential in shifting the focus towards dog protection, dog rehabilitation and finally dog adoption.

Hopefully, the new Sanctuary CEBIAM will the catalyst needed to drive increased dog rescues of street dogs, removal of abused dogs from irresponsible dog owners, greater vet care for these rescued dogs, expanded sterilization programs and promoting rehabilitation & adoption programs to help ensure Playa del Carmen can reduce needless euthanasia.
